Introduction to English for Work

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
The English for Work curriculum is designed to cater to the language needs of learners and prepare them to use the English language at work. It comprises of three syllabi namely English for Customer Service, English for Social Interactions and English for Work Operations. The English for Work curriculum is intended to fulfill the language requirements needed in the industries/workplace as well as the needs of diverse learners. Hence, each syllabus is designed to produce more competent and marketable individuals to confront global competitiveness.

English for Customer Sevice
a) Introduction
 
English for Customer Service is one of the learning areas in the English for Work curriculum. It is designed to equip learners with the necessary language skills so that they can communicate effectively in various work situations.

 b) Aims

This learning area focuses on the English language proficiency that learners require to perform efficiently in customer service. It aims at enhancing the language skills of the learners, particularly speaking skills, based on the stipulated learning outcomes.

c) Focus area

By the end of the learning area, learners should be able to:
  • use polite expressions while attending to clients; 
  • follow and give instructions and directions;
  • describe products/services/events/places and give recommendations.
English for Social Transaction

a) Introduction


English for Social Transactions is one of the learning areas in the English for Work curriculum. It is designed to equip learners with the necessary language skills so that they can communicate effectively in various work situations.

b) Aims

This learning area is designed to equip learners to use English in their daily work. This learning area  emphasizes on developing the learners’ speaking skills.


c) Focus area

By the end of this learning area, learners should be able to:

  • use polite social expressions amongst colleagues;
  • explain and state preferences related to plans; and
  • give, take and relay messages.


English for Work Operations


a) Introduction


English for Work Operations is one of the learning areas in the English for Work curriculum. It is designed to equip learners with the necessary language skills so that they can communicate effectively in various work operations.

b) Aims

This learning area aims at developing learners’ confidence and proficiency in English  to enable them to perform efficiently in work operations. It focuses on enhancing learners’ speaking skills.

c) Focus areas

By the end of this learning area, learners should be able to:

• describe equipment, places and personalities;
• give instructions, and explain rules and regulations;
• describe processes and procedures; and
• give presentations on products/services/events.
